Jorge Moll’s Research Finds That Kindness Really Does Matter

Have you heard that it is better to give than it is to receive? According to neuroscientist Jorge Moll, this is a scientific fact. He was part of a team who asked first to visualize giving a large sum of money to charity, then imagine keeping it for themselves. As the volunteers pictured this scenario, their brains were scanned. The results of these brain scans showed that the same part of the brain that is activated when a person anticipates eating or sexual stimulation is activated when they imagine helping others. Follow Jorge on

The connection that Jorge Moll and others involved in the study made between neuroscience and giving is an important one. It seems to suggest that the brain is pre-programmed for morality, and that this may have been an important part of human evolution. Further study indicates that human morality’s roots may lie in empathy. A study on rats showed that if a rat was aware that other rats were being harmed when they ate, they would eventually stop eating. Furthermore, patients with brain damage and mental health issues show signs of having less empathy than patients with no mental illness and/or brain damage.

Jorge Moll received his MD from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and his PhD in experimental physiopathology from Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz da Universidade de São Paulo. He is also the director and serves on the board of the D’Or Institute for Research and Education. He is an elected affiliate member of the Brazilian Academy of Science and governors board member of the International Neuroethics Society. He also received a Visiting Scholar Award from the Stanford Neuroscience Institute at Stanford University. His neuroscience work examines morality, behavioral neuroscience, and the prefrontal cortex. He is currently the head of the Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience Unit at the D’Or Institute for Research and Education, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Watch this video on Youtube.

Importance of early screening according to Lifeline Screening

Medical specialists and researchers have today acknowledged the importance of early screening. People are advised to get screening for diseases like cancer and other genetic diseases as early as possible. Although screening is key to survival and better life of the patient, most hospitals do not offer screening for all chronic diseases. They specialize in cancer. For those hospitals offering screening, it is at times very expensive that the average citizen cannot afford.

Lifeline Screening discovered this gap, and since it was founded in 1993 by Colin Scully and Timothy Phillips, the company has expanded in both its geographical coverage as well as in the number of tests carried out. The company expanded its operations to serve the United Kingdom in 2007. In 2012, it extended its services to Australia. Lifeline screening provides screening services for diabetes, cholesterol count, inflammation, ultrasound screening, finger-stick blood screenings and limited electrocardiograph to adult.

Limited Electrocardiograph Screening

Although the use of electrocardiographs is not one of the best procedures in detecting cardiovascular irregularities, they are non-invasive and are painless. They also serve a major role in detecting irregular patterns in heartbeat. Early detection of such irregularities is vital in preventing risks of stroke among other heart related complications.

Heart diseases claim the lives of many people every year. The risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases can stay in the body for several years without showing any signs. It is, thus, important to go for regular checkups and screening to help curb the disease before its onset. Some of the risk factors include having a family member who has suffered from cardiovascular disease, advance in age, smoking and hypertension. Male are under a higher risk than females.

Ultrasound Screening

Ultra sound screening techniques utilize sound waves to examine a given area. It is commonly used with pregnant women. Just like electrocardiograph, the procedure is painless and non-invasive. At Lifeline Screening, the latest technology of Doppler color flow is used when carrying out ultrasound screens. The screening are used for bone mineral density screening and abdominal aortic aneurysm among others.

Finger-Stick Blood Screening

The screening is done by getting a blood sample from the soft pad of the finger. The blood is then used for complete lipid panel screening, glucose screening and elevated liver enzymes screening among others.

Lifeline Screening uses the latest technology to help in early detection of diseases. Its employees are licensed professionals who work hand in hand with insurance companies to ensure patients get quality services. According to Andrew Manganaro, who is the chief medical officer of Lifeline, the company has screened over 8 million people.

Medicare Advantage Plans enable access to Better Healthcare

Many people struggle to afford quality healthcare in most parts of the word due to the high cost of medical bills. One of the ways to control your expenditure on medical bills is to buy an insurance cover. Medical insurance covers are not cheap either, so most governments step in and pay for their citizens’ medical cover partially or fully.

The US government came up with a managed insurance covers for its citizens, Medicaid and Medicare Advantage Plans like InnovaCare Health. The programs were introduced in the 70s. They allow beneficiaries to receive medical care from their preferred healthcare providers across the country.

The private Medicare providers are paid by medical insurance companies that have been contracted by the US government. The companies in return are paid premiums by the government equivalent to the services delivered. Under the Medicare Advantage Plans, beneficiaries can access an even wider range of services as opposed to those covered under the original Medicare program.

Medicare plans are divided into part A to part D where each part has a premium option. These premium options allow patients to access specified services as listed under Medicare cover. The federal government limits the amount payable from a patient’s pocket when he or she has enrolled to the Medicare program.

Each of existing Advantage Plans has their different set of rules that affect service delivery. The rules may vary for the same plans because different service providers also design and follow different rules and policies.

Anyone willing to join Medicare Advantage plan is free to do so as long as she has a Medicare basic plan B and lives in an area that has a plan service area to ensure she can access the services. Applicants should also not be diagnosed with an end-stage renal disease.
